The fourth corrected and expanded edition of this well-known successful textbook will be most welcome to students and teachers alike. The basic structure of the work is unchanged with some improvements of the text and some new exercises added. The first four chapters contain a compact modern treatment of classical complex function theory including e.g. numerous applications of the residue theorem, the Weierstraß product theorem and the theorem of Mittag-Leffler, the Riemann mapping theorem for plane domains, and various characterizations of simple connectivity. The following three chapters deal with elliptic functions (Weierstrassian theory, Abel's theorem, the modular function \(j)\), elliptic modular forms (structure of the ring of modular forms, unusually broad coverage of theta functions), and selected topics of analytic number theory (sums of squares. Dirichlet series with functional equation, Riemann's zeta-function and the prime number theorem). There are more than 400 carefully selected exercises varying indifficulty from routine exercises to quite demanding ones, and there are ample helpful hints towards the solutions of the exercises. Clearly, the first four chapters may serve as an excellent basis for a one-semester introductory course whereas the remaining chapters will form an equally excellent basis for a second course specializing on the topics indicated above. All readers will eagerly look forward to the publication of Vol. II of this wonderful work.
