Thermodynamics is a basic physical science, specially for two areas of engineering: energy technology and chemical technology (process engineering). The present 13th edition of the text-book, being proven for decades to be very worthwhile, contains a modern and comprehensive presentation of chemical thermodynamics. The book introduces the thermodynamic terminus, thermodynamic parameters, variables of state, characteristic thermodynamic parameters of processes and the equations of conservation of energy, entropy and exergy. Thermodynamic properties of pure fluids and mixtures of fluids are discussed in detail. On this basis, the thermodynamics of mixtures and chemical reactions is developed. There the book concentrates on the determination of the enthalpies and entropies of substances taking part in reacting mixtures of gases. Thermodynamic aspects of important energy engineering and process engineering applications are treated in a form well understandable and valuable for practitioners, e.g.\ fluid flow processes, adiabatic nozzles and diffusors, adiabatic turbines and compressors, and nonadiabatic compressors, thermic methods of separation of materials, phase equilibria and equilibria of chemical reactions, combustion processes and combustion engines, thermic power stations, heating systems and cooling equipments. The 13th edition of the work contains new sections on data of used material and useful formulae to calculate various temperature dependences. Many corrections and additions are made treating the thermodynamic equilibrium and carbon-dioxide emissions of electrical current generation. The chapter on combustion processes and combustion power stations is completely revised. The book is well suitable as textbook for students of mechanical engineering and process engineering, but it is also a valuable reference book for engineers in science and practice.
