This paper presents a generalized chi square method for the estimation of weights in the analytic hierarchy process and studies its properties such as invariance under transpose, harmony and rank preservation. A convergent iterative algorithm is given and its usability is shown by a numerical example. The numerical results show that the method can be used to obtain desirable weights. The author claims that his method is preferable to the eigenvector method algorithm in several important respects.
