Let \({\mathcal C}_1, {\mathcal C}_2\) be Grothendieck categories endowed with torsion theories \(({\mathcal T}_1, {\mathcal F}_1)\) \(({\mathcal T}_2, {\mathcal F}_2)\), respectively. If every object of \({\mathcal C}_1\) is a subobject of a torsion object and dually every object of \({\mathcal C}_2\) is a quotient object of a torsion free object, then for a pair of adjoint functors \(F:{\mathcal C}_1 \leftrightarrows {\mathcal C}_2:G\) which induces an equivalence between categories of torsion and torsion free objects in \({\mathcal C}_1\) and \({\mathcal C}_2\) respectively, \({\mathcal T}_1\) is the kernel of the first right derived functor of \(F\) and all other derived functors of \(F\) are \(0\). Moreover, it is possible to define a left derived functor of \(G\), even in the case when the considered categories have not enough projectives. Consequently, the author is able to give a wide generalization of the Brenner-Butler tilting theorem. The author dicusses also applications to rings with local units.
