A group is said to be \((2,3)\)-generated if it can be generated by an involution and an element of order 3. Since the group \(\text{SL}(3,p)\) is \((2,3)\)-generated for any prime \(p\), it is natural to ask whether \(\text{SL}(3,\mathbb{Z})\) is \((2,3)\)-generated. The authors give a negative answer to this question.
