In integral form of Wagner-Papanastasiou constitutive equation with damping function for viscoelastic polymer fluid, the memory function is a linear combination of two invariants of uniaxial flow. In the present paper the author examines a modification to the damping function which is based on a nonlinear combination of invariants for both planar and uniaxial extension, demonstrating shear-thinning behaviour. The rheological functions, such as shear viscosity and normal stress difference, are compared for the present modification and for the Wagner-Papanastasiou model. The extensional viscosity calculated by the modified model is compared with experiments. The new damping model gives vortex growth for both planar and axisymmetric flows of LDEPE, and can be is used to simulate planar contraction flows and axisymmetric contraction flows.
