A systematic framework is presented for solving algebraic equations arising in geometric constraint solving. The approach combines geometric reasoning, symbolic reduction, and homotopy continuation. The literature concerning the methods which may be used to numerically solve the nonlinear systems which are derived are also thoroughly surveyed. Among the methods discussed are the homotopy methods, Gröbner basis methods and elimination methods.
