The André-Quillen homology of simplicial \(l\)-algebras over a field \(l\) having certain vanishing properties is investigated. If \(l\) has positive characteristic, an algebraic version of a theorem of J.-P. Serre and Y. Umeda [\textit{J.-P. Serre}, Comment. Math. Helv. 27, 198-232 (1953; Zbl 0052.19501) and \textit{Y. Umeda}, Proc. Japan Acad. 35, 563-566 (1959; Zbl 0108.17702)] characterizing simplicial algebras with bounded homotopy groups is obtained. It is discussed how this theorem fails in the rational case and it is indicated how the algebraic Serre theorem can be used to resolve a conjecture of \textit{D. Quillen} [in: Appl. categorical Algebra, Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 17, 65-87 (1970; Zbl 0234.18010); (5.7)] for algebras of finite type over Noetherian rings of non-zero characteristic.
