The author considers a multi-dimensional system of linear equations: \[ {d y\over dx} h=(A(x)h)y, \qquad y(x)\in F,\quad h\in E,\quad x\in U\subset E, \] where \(E\) and \(F\) are finite-dimensional spaces, \(A:U\to L(E,L(F,F))\). A weak characteristic exponent describes the rate of exponential growth for a solution along a straight ray, which goes to infinity. The higher exponent is the largest characteristic exponent over all solutions in a cone \(K\). The main result of the paper is the following theorem. Let the exponents of all solutions of the system be continuous, and let \(K\) be a locally connected separable cone with a vertex at the origin. Then the system has a solution with a higher exponent, and for any \(x_0\in U\) the set of initial conditions \(\{ \eta\in F \}\), such that a solution to the Cauchy problem with \(y(x_0)=\eta\) is a solution with the higher exponent, is dense in \(F\) and has a complete measure.
