Vertex operator algebras are deeply connected with many mathematical theories. In the paper [\textit{J. Lepowsky}, Vertex operator algebras and the zeta function, In: N. Jing and K. C. Misra (eds.), Recent Developments in Quantum Affine Algebras and related topics, Contemp. Math. 248, 327-340 (1999; Zbl 1036.17022)] the author found a remarkable connection of vertex operator algebra theory with the Riemann zeta function in number theory. He also announced a new type of the ``Jacobi identity'' for vertex operator algebras. These constructions were motivated by the work of \textit{S. Bloch} [J. Algebra 182, 476-500 (1996; Zbl 0868.17017)] involving zeta values and central extensions of Lie algebras of differential operators. In the present paper, the author continues this study and presents the proofs of the announced results. In particular, he proves the commutator formula for the vertex operators of the form \(X( Y[u,y] v, e ^{w} x)\) where \((v,x) = x ^{wt v} Y(v,x)\) and \(Y[u,y] = e^{ y wt u} Y( u, e ^{y} - 1)\).
