The spectral method using a double Fourier series as orthogonal basis functions is applied to the solution of shallow water equations on sphere. The author constructs a spectral filter consisting of high-order Laplacian operators (\(\nabla^4\) and \(\nabla^6\)), and uses it to prevent the nonlinear instability. A standard test allows to evaluate the error of the new method for various resolutions. It is shown that the accuracy of the method is comparable to that of spherical method, and that in some cases the new method provides more accurate time integration.
