The authors derive a lower estimate for eigenvalues of the square of the Dirac operator on a compact Riemannian spin manifold of dimension \(\geq 2\). They prove that for any eigenvalue \(\lambda\) of the Dirac operator and any real numbers \(a\) and \(b\) and any real-valued function \(h\) the following inequality holds \[ \begin{multlined} \lambda^2 \geq \\ \geq {n\over n-1} \inf_M \left\{{S\over 4}- \left({n-1\over 2}-a\right) \Delta (h) - \left({(n-1)(n-2)\over 4} + a^2 + nb^2 -na +2a -2ab\right)|dh|^2\right\}\end{multlined} \] where \(S\) is the infimum of the scalar curvature. This estimate generalizes previous bounds by \textit{Th. Friedrich} [Math. Nachr. 97, 117-146 (1980; Zbl 0462.53027)] and \textit{O. Hijazi} [Commun. Math. Phys. 104, 151-162 (1986; Zbl 0593.58040)]. The equality case of this inequality yields two new field equations.
