Let \(K\) be an algebraic number field, let \(S\) be a finite subset of cardinality \(s\) of its places containing all infinite places, let \({\mathcal O}_{K,S}\) be the ring of \(S\) integers and \({\mathcal O}^*_{K,S}\) the group of \(S\) units of \(K\). Let \(K\) be embedded in a fixed algebraic closure \(\overline Q\) and denote by \({\mathcal O}_K\) and \({\mathcal O}^*_K\) the ring of \(S'\) integers and group of \(S'\) units, respectively, where \(S'\) is the set of extensions of places of \(S\). Let \(F\in {\mathcal O}_{K,S}[X,Y]\) be an irreducible binary form of degree \(r\). The author considers the solutions \((x,y)\in {\mathcal O}^2_S\), \([K(x,y):K]\leq d\) of the equation \[ F(x,y)\in {\mathcal O}^*_{K,S}. \] Two solutions are said to lie in the same \({\mathcal O}^*_S\)-coset, if one of them can be obtained from the other by multiplication with a unit in \({\mathcal O}^*_S\). \(H(.)\) denotes the absolute multiplicative Weil height. It is shown that if \(r>2d^2\) then the solutions with \[ H(x,y))\geq e^{8r^2}H(F)^{6r} \] lie in the union of at most \((e^4r)^{2s+9}\) \({\mathcal O}^*_S\)-cosets. It is remarkable that the result is independent of the coefficients of the binary form \(F\), cf. \textit{J. H. Evertse} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 482, 121-149 (1997; Zbl 0861.11021)]. The proofs follow the arguments of \textit{D. J. Lewis} and \textit{K. Mahler} [Acta Arith. 6, 333-363 (1961; Zbl 0102.03601)] and are based on the results of \textit{E. Wirsing} [Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 20, 213-247 (1971; Zbl 0223.10017)] and the author [Acta Arith. 89, 97-122 (1999; Zbl 0938.11035)].
