This book presents several design methods for the modelling and control of nonlinear processes using ``soft computing''. Chapter two introduces fuzzy sets, fuzzy logic and fuzzy modelling. Chapter three is a tutorial on neural networks in a control context and neuro-fuzzy systems are included. Chapter four is on genetic algorithms and simulated annealing and they are applied to neural nets and fuzzy systems. Chapter five attempts to handle dynamical systems, chaos and its control. Chapter six attempts to use a ``fuzzy fractal approach'' for times series analysis and prediction. Chapter seven is on fuzzy modelling. Chapter eight attempts to establish a framework for the simulation of fuzzy chaotic systems which are defined in the one-dimensional case by a large fractal dimension of associated quantities. The rest of the book focuses on applications (robots, biochemical reactors, aircraft dynamics, electrochemical processes, international trade dynamics). There are around 140 references (around 25 of which are from the authors) and an index at the end. Each chapter ends with a summary. The book leaves an overall impression of superficiality. Rather than an in-depth analysis of the methods establishing proofs and algorithms, comparing the methods, justifying them, assessing their efficiency in various contexts, the authors present a flavour of concepts and many statements. They seem to be adepts of using the following trick for automating creativity: i) Consider two disciplines, ii) Mix them, iii) Get what results, iv) Publish. We do not recommend this book.
