Let \(\Omega\) be a proper subdomain in the extended complex plane such that \(\infty\in\Omega\). Let \({\mathbf K}={\mathbf C}\setminus \Omega\) and, for each \(n\), assume that all of the zeros of a monic polynomial \(Q_n\) of degree \(n\) are in \(\mathbf K\). The author is concerned with whether or not \((Q_n)\) can be chosen so that, if \(f\) is any holomorphic function on \(\Omega\) and \(P_n\) is the polynomial part of the Laurent expansion of \(Q_nf\) at \(\infty\), then \((P_n/Q_n)\) converges to \(f\) locally uniformly on \(\Omega\). The author shows that such a sequence \((Q_n)\) can be chosen if and only if either \(\mathbf K\) has zero logarithmic capacity or \(\Omega\) is regular. This result establishes a natural restricted form of the conjecture of \textit{A. Ambroladze} and \textit{H. Wallin} [Constructive Approximation 12, No. 1, 157-159 (1996; Zbl 0852.41010)], that if \(\text{cap}({\mathbf K}) > 0\) and a sequence \((Q_n)\) with the above property exists then \(\Omega\) must be regular.
