Optimal Hankel norm approximation (OHNA) is a technique often used to study the question of whether a model for a large scale system can be simplified while preserving a reasonable degree of accuracy. A solution is provided to the OHNA problem for exponentially stable regular Pritchard-Salamon systems with finite-dimensional input and output spaces. For this class of systems, the OHNA problem has been solved in the literature using \(J\)-spectral factorization (the Ball-Helton approach). In the reviewed paper the solution is self-contained and is based on a recent inertia result on infinite-dimensional Lyapunov equations [see \textit{A. J. Sasane} and \textit{R. Curtain}, Syst. Control Lett. 43, 127-132 (2001; Zbl 0974.93026)]. A complete description of the solution set of the OHNA problem is also given.
