This monograph describes the most important theorems of critical point theory in view of their applications to some questions in differential equations. Hence the reader will find the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz mountain pass theorem, Rabinowitz saddle point theorems, some more recent linking theorems, Clarke's dual least action principle, and some minimax theorems for locally Lipschitz functionals. They are clearly and thoroughly presented. The authors have illustrated those abstract existence results by applications mostly taken through their own contributions: semilinear Neumann boundary value problems, Hammerstein integral equations, periodic solutions, differential equations with discontinuous nonlinearities, homoclinic solutions of various classes of equations and semilinear Schrödinger equations. A bibliography is given at the end of each chapter, and helps as a guide to the existing literature.
