It is shown that two (not necessarily selfadjoint) operator algebras are strongly Morita equivalent in the sence of the paper [\textit{David P. Blecher, Paul S. Muhly}, and \textit{Vern I. Paulsen} ``Categories of operator modules (Morita equivalence and projective modules)'', Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 691 (2000; Zbl 0966.46033)] if and only if the categories of operator modules corresponding to these algebras are equivalent via completely contractive functors. Moreover, any such functor is completely isometrically isomorphic to the Haagerup tensor product with a strong Morita equivalence bimodule. This generalizes similar results for \(C^*\)-algebras proved in [\textit{D. P. Blecher}, Math. Scand. 88, No. 1, 137-153 (2001; Zbl 1028.46087)]. The paper starts with a concise review of the pure algebraic background, and of the previous work in the operator algebra context.
