There is no author's abstract and the title is slightly misleading. The main result of the paper is Theorem 1 which gives an asymptotic formula for the number of domino tilings of a rectilinear polygon on a plane square lattice in terms of the area, perimeter and average height function defined in the text, making use of results obtained by the author, Kasteleyn and the reviewer and others. 26 references.
