The author studies the initial value problem for a system of two Schrödinger equations: \[ i\partial _tq=-1/2 \triangle q+q^2r+2\alpha x_1q, \quad i\partial _tr=\lambda /2 \triangle r-qr^2-2\alpha x_1r, \] where \(\lambda \), \(\alpha \) are real constants, \(q\) and \(r\) are unknown complex functions in \(\mathbb{R}^n\), and \(x_1\) is the first coordinate of the vector \(x\in \mathbb{R}^n\). In case \(\lambda =1\) the system can be written in Hamiltonian form. It is well known that the decay of the initial data in the \(x\) variable is not preserved by solutions of Schrödinger evolution equations. The author shows that in the case of decay combined with regularity then both properties are preserved. The Cauchy problem associated to the system under consideration is investigated in weighted Sobolev spaces. The existence of global solutions is discussed as well. Moreover, it is shown that the spatial decay of the initial data and its derivatives improves the regularity of the solutions.
