Nonseparable bidimensional filter banks are constructed via two monodimensional filter banks and two trigonometric polynomials \(\alpha, \beta\) on \(R\), for which \(\alpha(0)=1, \;|\alpha(x)|^2+ |\beta(x)|^2=1\). Necessary conditions for the filter banks to generate wavelets with a certain critical Sobolev exponent (resp. a certain number of vanishing moments) are given. Finally, it is proved that arbitrary smooth, nonseparable, and compactly supported wavelets can be obtained via these filters.
