The need for a wider non-abelian applicability of homological algebra has led research towards the consideration of which categorical settings allow analogues of classical results to be proved. Much can be done in the protomodular categories used in this paper. This class of categories include many `non-linear' settings such as groups, rings, Lie algebras, Jordan algebras, the dual of the category of pointed sets and more generally categories of internal groups or rings within a left exact regular category. This paper addresses the problem of proving a version of the \(3 \times 3\) lemma and snake lemma within a quasi-pointed regular and protomodular category. Some applications are discussed and some relations with the theory of crossed modules and central extensions are given.
