The following problem is discussed: If \(F\) is a quadratic field and \(E=F({\mathbf p})\) a ray class field, just when does \(E/F\) have a normal integral basis (that is, when is \(O_E\) free over the group ring \(O_F[\)Gal\((E/F)]\))? The main results give lists of criteria on \(F\) and \(\mathbf p\) ensuring that \(E/F\) does not have a normal integral basis. It does not seem possible to give a concise and still faithful summary of these criteria, so we have to refer the reader to the paper; we just mention that one essential point is consideration of the ray class group modulo 4 times the product of the real places. The case \(F\) imaginary had been considered earlier by Brinkhuis, by Gómez Ayala, and by the reviewer. Except for some linguistic slips (read ``valid'' instead of ``strong'' in line 18 of p.3, for example) the paper is meticulously written and quite readable. It also offers some tables of examples.
