The paper deals with the Cauchy problem \[ u_t=u_{xx}+\alpha|u|^{p-1}u\quad\text{in} {\mathbb{R}}\times(0,T),\qquad u(x,0)=\varphi(x)\quad\text{in} {\mathbb{R}}, \] where \(\varphi\in L^\infty({\mathbb{R}})\cap L^1({\mathbb{R}})\) changes its sign finitely many times, \(p>1\) and \(\alpha\geq 0.\) Defining the set of zeros of a solution \(u\) by \(Z(t)=\{x\in{\mathbb{R}}:u(x,t)=0\}\) for \(t>0,\) the author shows that, in the case \(\alpha=0,\) the set \(Z(t)\) is contained in \([-Ct,Ct]\) for large \(t>0\) with some \(C>0\), and this order of \(t\) is the best possible one. When \(\alpha>0,\) estimates of \(Z(t)\) for global solutions are provided. Moreover, \(Z(t)\subset [-K,K]\) for all \(t\in (0,T)\) with some \(K>0\) for each blow-up solution, where \(T\) is the blow-up time.
