In [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 88, 151-169 (1998; Zbl 0960.57007)], \textit{N. A'Campo} defined a divide \(P\) which is the image of an immersion \(\alpha: \coprod_j I_j \to D^2\) of \(k\) copies of the finite unit intervals into the unit disc in \(R^2\) with the following properties: (i) the immersion is generic (only double points and transverse at those double points); (ii) \(\alpha^{-1}(\partial D^2) = \coprod_j \partial I_j\) and the immersion is orthogonal to \(\partial D^2\); and (iii) the image of \(\alpha\) is connected. Then A'Campo associated a link \(L(P)\) for the divide \(P\) as a subset \((x, u) \in P \times T_xP\) with \(|x|^2+|u|^2=1\). The link fibers over \(S^1\), and A'Campo presents a method to draw an surface which is a model for the fiber and expresses the monodromy as a product of Dehn twists around explicit cycles. The paper under review defines an extrovert divide which is a divide with two extra conditions: (a) At least one corner belongs to an exterior region at each double point, (b) for each interior region, there is at least one edge which is also adjacent to an exterior region. The extrovert divide is a generalization of \textit{N. A'Campo}'s slalom divide in his paper [ibid., Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 88, 171-180 (1998; Zbl 0960.57008)]. The authors obtain a projection of the link associated to an extrovert divide by choosing ap propriate over- and undercrossings. The idea is to prove that the shaded surface from the projection is Seifert and to determine that the monodromy of the fibration agrees with A'Campo's monodromy. The proof uses ideas and results of Scharlemann and Thomson (1989) and Gabai (1983) which relate Conway moves, fibered links and Murasugi plumbings. The main result is stated in Theorem 4.1.
