The Hilbert boundary problem for general first-order elliptic systems are shown to be \(n\)-normal and their indexes are explicitly computed. Precisely, let \(R\) be a Riemann surface with compact boundary \(\partial R\) and genus \(h\). The operator is \(Lw = \left(\frac{\partial w}{\partial \overline{z}}+\mu_1(z)\frac{\partial w}{\partial z}+ \mu_2(z) \frac{\partial\overline w}{\partial\overline z} + a(z)w + b(z)\overline w\right)d\overline z\). Here \(\mu_1\), \(\mu_2\), \(a\) and \(b\) are square matrices of order \(n\). From \(L\), the operator \(H\) (\(Hw = \{Lw,\text{Re}(\overline\lambda w\mid \partial R)\})\) is introduced. Here \(\lambda\) is a smooth unitary matrix of order \(n\) defined on \(\partial R\). The Hilbert boundary problem is to solve the equation \(Hw = \{\phi, f\}\). By using precise estimates of Sobolev type norms on \(R\) and \(\partial R\), this problem is shown to be \(n\)-normal and its index is computed to be \(2\kappa-n(2h + m-2)\), where \(\kappa = \text{Ind det }\lambda\) (Lemma 7 and Theorem).
