    This paper is concerned with the initial value problem for the following hyperbolic equation with operator coefficients: \[ {d^2u\over dt^2}+ B(t){du\over dt}+ A(t) u= f,\quad t\in [0,T], \] \[ u|_{t=0}= 0,\quad {du\over dt}\bigl|_{t=0}= 0, \] where \(A(t)\) and \(B(t)\), \(t\in \Theta\), are linear unbounded operators in some Hilbert space \(H\) and \(\Theta\) is some set of full measure on \([0,T]\). It is assumed that \(A(t)\) is a positive definite selfadjoint operator for each \(t\in\Theta\) and \(B(t) A^{-1/2}(t)\in L_\infty(]0, T[,{\mathcal L}(H))\). Under some more additional assumptions it is shown that the solution \(u\) of the above problem such that \[ \int^T_0 \Biggl|{du\over dt}\Biggr|^2 dt+ \int^T_0|A^{1/2}(t) u|^2 dt< \infty \] exists and is unique. The result is applied to the equation \[ \partial^2 u(t,x)/\partial t^2- t^{-\beta}\partial^2 u(t,x)/\partial x \partial t- t^{-\alpha} \partial^2u(t, x)/\partial x^2= f(t,x),\text{ in }]0,T[\times ]0,l[, \] where \(\alpha\geq 4\) and \(\beta\leq \alpha/2-1\), with the boundary conditions \(\partial u(t,0)/\partial x= u(t,l)= 0\), and the homogeneous initial conditions \(u(0,x)= 0\), \(\partial u(0, x)/\partial t=0\).
