The set [\textit{M. Mulase}, J. Differ. Geom. 19, No. 2, 403-430 (1984; Zbl 0559.35076)] given by: \{subspaces \(L \subset k\bigl((z)\bigr)\) such that the projection \(L\to k \bigl((z)\bigr)/k [[z]]\) has finite-dimensional kernel and cokernel\} is known as the infinite grassmannian of \(k((z))\) and can be endowed with an analytic space structure [\textit{G. Segal} and \textit{G. Wilson}, Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Études Sci. 61, 5-65 (1985; Zbl 0592.35112)] or with a scheme structure [\textit{A. Álvarez Vázquez}, \textit{J. M. Muñoz Porras} and \textit{F. J. Plaza Martín}, in: Workshop on abelian varieties and theta functions, Aportaciones Mat., Investig. 13, 3-40 (1998; Zbl 0995.14021); \textit{A. A. Beilinson} and \textit{V. V. Schechtman}, Commun. Math. Phys. 118, No. 4, 651-701 (1988; Zbl 0665.17010); \textit{J. M. Muñoz Porras} and \textit{F. J. Plaza Martín}, J. Differ. Geom. 51, No. 3, 431-469 (1999; Zbl 1065.14512)]. In both cases, it is of infinite dimension. In this paper the author studies some properties of this type of infinite grassmannians from the point of view of algebraic geometry. In particular, he proves that its Picard group is isomorphic to \(\mathbb{Z}\) and that it is generated by the determinant bundle. The Plücker morphism is defined and it is shown to be a closed immersion into an infinite dimensional projective space. Furthermore, thanks to an explicit computation of global sections of the dual of the determinant bundle, the equations of this immersion are given. These equations consist of all classical Plücker equations, which were used by Sato to define the infinite grassmannian [\textit{M. Sato} and \textit{Y. Sato}, Nonlinear partial differential equations in applied science, North-Holland Math. Stud. 81, 259-271 (1983; Zbl 0528.58020)]. Finally, the relation between the groups Aut Gr \(V\) and \(\text{Gl} V\) \((V\) being a vector space) is discussed. The well known result that they coincide when \(V\) is finite dimensional or \(V\) is a Hilbert space are recovered although it is shown that this property fails for a general \(V\).
