The indefinite Sturm-Liouville problem of the form \[ -y''+[\lambda^2f(x)+q(x)]y=0, \quad A\leq x\leq B, \qquad y(A)=y(B)=0, \] is considered where the functions \(f(x)\), \(q(x)\) are real and integrable on \([A,B]\) and \[ \int_A^B\sqrt{f_{\pm}} dx>0, \] with \(f_{\pm}=\max\{\pm f,0\}\). It is shown by \textit{S. G. Pyatkov} [Russ. Acad. Sci., Sb., Math. 81, No. 2, 343-361 (1995); translation from Mat. Sb. 185, No. 3, 93-116 (1994; Zbl 0834.47007)] that the real branch of eigenvalues of the problem behave asymptotically as follows \[ \lambda_n\sim{\pi n\over\int_A^B\sqrt{f_{-}}dx}. \] The author refines these asymptotics under the additional assumptions of smoothness on the functions \(f(x)\) and \(q(x)\) and of finiteness of the number of zeros of \(f(x)\) (i.e. of so-called turning points).
