      J. Taylor (1972) suggested a general scheme for constructing functional calculi. In particular, this scheme includes a completion procedure for the universal enveloping algebra \(U(E)\) of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra \(E\). The problem on a functional calculus, for a given homomorphism \(\alpha: U(E)\to A\) into an arbitrary Banach algebra \(A\) and with respect to a family of topological ''function'' algebras \({\mathcal O}_{\gamma}\) and homomorphisms \(\varphi_{\gamma}: U(E) \to {\mathcal O}_{\gamma}\), is posed as the problem of finding algebras \({\mathcal O}_{\gamma}\) for which \(\alpha\) can be extended to a continuous homomorphism \(\alpha_{\gamma}: {\mathcal O}_{\gamma} \to A\) such that \(\alpha_{\gamma} \varphi_{\gamma}=\alpha\). The author introduces topological algebras \({\mathcal O}_E(D_r)\) that generalize the algebras \({\mathcal O}(D_r)\) of holomorphic functions on open polydisks \(D_r=D_{r_1} \times \dots \times D_{r_n}\) in \(\mathbb{C}^n\) to the case in which the ''coordinate functions'' form a basis of a nilpotent Lie algebra \(E\). Under natural conditions he establishes the existence of a functional calculus with respect to the family of algebras \({\mathcal O}_E (D_r)\) and the spectral mapping property for holomorphic functions of noncommuting variables.
