This is a collection of lectures presented in a special course organized by ``International centre for mechanical sciences'', Udine, Italy. Contents: 1. Introduction to damage mechanics, by \textit{D. Krajcinovic}; 2. Statistics toolbox for damage and fracture, by \textit{A. Hansen} and \textit{S. Roux}; 3. Molecular and particle simulations, by \textit{D. Krajcinovic}; 4. Measurement and damage parameters of brittle disordered media like concrete and rock, by \textit{J. Van Mier}; 5. Micro-crack clustering, non-local and gradient models, by \textit{G. Pijaudier-Cabot}; 6. Premises to a multifield approach to stochastic damage evolution, by \textit{P. M. Mariano}. Mainly statistical physics method are used to study the effects of random distributed microcracks. On balance, this is an interesting and useful contribution.
