Remark on a paper of Yu on Heilbronn's exponential sum (Q5931317)

Let \[ S_h(a,p)= \sum_{h=1}^p e(an^{hp}/p^2), \] so that \(S_1(a,p)\) is ``Heilbronn's sum''. In joint work by \textit{S. V. Konyagin} and the reviewer [Q. J. Math. 51, 221-235 (2000; Zbl 0983.11052)] it has been shown that \(S_1(a,p)\ll p^{7/8}\) for \(p\nmid a\). General values of \(h\) were considered by \textit{H. Yu} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 127, 1995-1998 (1999; Zbl 0921.11045)] who showed that \(S_h(a,p)\ll (h,p-1) p^{11/12}\) for \(p\nmid a\). The present paper improves this to give \[ S_h(a,p)\ll (h,p-1)^{11/16} p^{7/8}. \] The argument makes efficient use of results from the above-mentioned paper of Konyagin and the reviewer.
