A simple introduction to develop discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for nonlinear conservation laws is presented. The main difficulty is how to re-introduce the neglected physical information after the conservation laws have been obtained from well-posed problems in order to approximate the physically relevant solution called the entropy solution. For the classical case of the entropy solution it is shown how to do this for two DG methods. The first one is the shock-capturing DG method which does not use slope delimiters and is implicit. The second one is the Runge-Kutta DG method which is an explicit method that does not employ a shock-capturing term but uses a slope delimiter instead. Then the focus is put on the Runge-Kutta DG methods and it is shown how to obtain a key stability property which holds independently of the accuracy of the scheme and of the nonlinearity of the conservation law.
