An approximation is developed to describe the superposition of independent discrete-time Markov renewal processes by a suitably chosen discrete-time Markov renewal process. The main problem is to construct a state space for the approximating process which is small enough for explicit calculations. This is applied to investigate (approximately) a finite buffer multiplexer for the input from discrete time on-off sources. Performance measures obtained in this way analytically are compared with simulation results of the original system.
