The aim of this article is to define and study a new distribution corresponding to the generalized gamma function introduced by \textit{F. Al-Musallam} and \textit{S. L. Kalla} [Integral Transforms Spec. Funct. 7, 175-190 (1998; Zbl 0922.33001)]. The authors define the probability density function (PDF) associated with this distribution and show that gamma, generalized gamma, and gamma-type distributions are special cases of their generalized, unified form. Some basic functions associated with the considered PDF are derived; namely, the mean, the moment generating function, the hazard rate function, and the mean residue life function. Comparative graphs of the PDF, hazard rate function, and mean residue life function are given. Using these comparative graphs, the role of the shape and scale parameters of the proposed generalized form of gamma-type distribution is demonstrated.
