Almost two thirds of the paper is an enjoyable annotated survey on the history, proofs, connections, and generalizations of the inequality \(e\sum_{n=1}^N a_n \geq \sum_{n=1}^N\prod_{k=1}^n a_k ^{1/n}\) of \textit{T. Carleman} [in Conférences faites au cinquième congrès des mathématiciens scandinaves, Helsinki, 1922, 181-196 (1923; JFM 49.0705.04)].
