Necessary and sufficient conditions on the continuous real function \(g\) and on the real function \(h\) with \(|h(1)|\neq 1\) are offered so that the functional equation \(f(xg[f(y)]+yh[f(x)]) =f(x)f(y) (x,y \in \mathbb{R})\) have a real continuous nonconstant solution \(f\) and the general such solutions are enumerated. Another paper will deal with the \(|h(1)|=1\) cases.
