For a given positive integer \(g\) and a set \(\mathcal D\subset\{0,1,\dots,g-1\}\), the authors consider the set \(\mathcal W_D\) of those positive integers all digits in base \(g\) of which belong to \(\mathcal D\). It is shown that under some mild restrictions on the size and structure of \(\mathcal D\), the function \(\omega \) has the same maximal order on \(\mathcal W_D\) as on the set of all natural numbers. They also show that the variance of \(\omega\) on \(\mathcal W_D\) can be estimated like on all integers. These improve results of \textit{P. Erdős, C. Mauduit} and \textit{A. Sárközy} [Discrete Math. 200, 149-164 (1999; Zbl 0945.11006)]. They also give an estimate for the maximal order of \(\Omega\) on the set of integers whose sum of digits in base \(g\) is fixed, confirming a conjecture of \textit{C. Mauduit and A. Sárközy} [Acta Arith. 81, 145-173 (1997; Zbl 0887.11008)].
