    Let \(H\) be a closed subset of the real interval \([a,b]\) and \(f : H\to \mathbb{R}\). Let \(x\) be a limit point of \(H\) and \(r\) a positive integer. If there are real numbers \(f_{\langle 1\rangle}(x,H), \ldots, f_{\langle r\rangle}(x,H)\) such that \[ f(x+t)=f(x)+\sum_{i=1}^r{t^i\over i!}f_{\langle i\rangle}(x,H)+{t^r\over r!}\varepsilon_r(f;x,t,H) \] and \(\lim_{t\to 0, x+t\in H}\varepsilon_r(f;x,t,H)=0\), then \(f_{\langle r\rangle}(x,H)\) is called the \(r\)th Peano derivative of \(f\) at \(x\) relative to \(H\). Let \(E\) be a closed set with \(\inf E=a\), \(\sup E=b\), and \(k\) be a positive integer. Let \(f: E\to \mathbb{R}\) be such that the Peano derivative \(f_{\langle k\rangle}(x,E)\) exists on \(E\). The authors show that under certain conditions on \(f\) there exists an extension \(F : [a,b]\to \mathbb{R}\) of \(f\) such that the ordinary derivative \(F^{(k)}(x)\) of \(F\) exists and is continuous on \([a,b]\), and that for \(x\in E\), \(f_{\langle i\rangle}(x,E)= F^{(i)}(x)\) for \(i=1, \ldots, k\).
