\textit{S. Mazur} and \textit{S. Ulam} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris 194, 949-948 (1932; Zbl 0004.02103)] showed that a surjective isometry between real normed vector spaces is an affine mapping. Starting from this result, the author provides a summary of similar results within the following half-century for isometries and approximate isometries. Examples and some proofs are given.
