The author considers the initial boundary value problem for a mixed hyperbolic-parabolic differential inclusion. The problem is of the form \[ \ddot u(t) +A(t)\dot u(t)+ Bu(t) + \phi(u(x,t))\ni f(t)\;\text{a.e. on} [0,T], \] \[ u(x,t)=0\text{ a.e. on }\partial\Omega\times [0,T],\quad u(0) = u_0,\quad \dot u(0) = u_1, \] where \(A : L^2([0, T],L^2(\Omega))\to L^2([0,T],L^2(\Omega))\) is a weakly continuous and nonnegative operator, \(B\) is a linear, continuous, symmetric and semicoercive operator, \(\phi\) is a certain set-valued mapping which is not necessarily monotonic, continuous or linear, \(f\in L^2([0,T],L^2(\Omega))\), and \(\Omega\) is a bounded open subset of \(\mathbb{R}^N\) with a regular boundary. This problem is motivated by questions of continuum mechanics and optimal control. In section 3, the author proves the existence of a weak solution to this problem, using the Faedo-Galerkin method. In section 4, the author studies the decay of the solution for \(T=\infty\) under additional assumptions including \(f \equiv 0\), and in particular shows that there exist \(\mu_1,\mu_2 >0\) such that \(|\dot u(t)|^2_{L^2(\Omega)}\leq \mu_1\text{exp}(-\mu_2t)\) a.e. on \([0,\infty)\).
