Let \(\Omega\) be a planar domain with at least three boundary points, and let \(\rho(z,w), z,w\in\Omega\) denote the hyperbolic distance corresponding to the complete conformal metric of constant curvature -1. In this paper, the authors show that there exist such \(\Omega\), and \(K\)-quasiconformal self-homeomorphisms \(f\) of it, which are the identity at the boundary, and for which \(\rho(z,f(z)) > \log K\) for some \(z\in\Omega\). This answers in the negative a question raised by \textit{G. J. Martin} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 125, No. 4, 1095-1103 (1997; Zbl 0870.30017)].
