The authors use the method of upper and lower solutions to prove the existence of extremal solutions in a sector to the nonlinear second-order differential equation \[ x''(t)=f(t,x(t),x'(t)), \quad\text{a.e. } t\in [0,T]. \] Boundary conditions under consideration are both of Sturm-Liouville and periodic type. The nonlinearity is assumed to satisfy the Carathéodory conditions. Properties of the set of solutions are also included, generalizing previous results.
