The main result is an asymptotic formula for the integral \(\int_0^T E_2(t) dt\), where \(E_2(t)\) denotes the error term for the fourth moment of the zeta-function. The leading term in this formula is \(T^{3/2}\) times a bounded spectral series, which can be shown to be \(\Omega _{\pm }(1)\). Hence one may deduce previously known omega-estimates for \(E_2(T)\). The proof of the main result utilizes the spectral theory of the Mellin transform of the fourth power of Riemann's zeta-function, for which the author shows a mean square estimate on lines slightly to the left of the critical line.
