The so-called canonical number systems (cns) were studied by Kátai, Szabó, Kovács, and Pethő. The general case of cns was considered by \textit{B. Kovács} and \textit{A. Pethő} [Acta Sci. Math. 55, 287-299 (1991; Zbl 0760.11002)]. Related to each cns is a so called fundamental region (that region can be embedded in a finite dimensional real vector space). The main purpose of this paper is the calculation of the box counting dimension of this embedding for the case of the cns's in real quadratic number fields. The work of \textit{K. Falconer} [Fractal geometry: mathematical foundations and applications, Wiley (1997; Zbl 0871.28009)] gives a graph theoretic setting: namely, graph-directed sets. What also play a role here are fractals, Pisot numbers, Hausdorff dimensions. The results obtained in this paper are much too technical to formulate here.
