The authors present an elementary combinatorial-metrical proof of the Gauss-Bonnet formula for hyperbolic manifolds of finite volume. They do not use arithmetical and differential geometrical machinery but rather use H. Hopf's original ideas [see Nachr. Ges. Wiss. Göttingen Math.-Phys. Kl. 1925, 131-141 (1925; JFM 51.0567.01)].
