Let \(K\subset{\mathbb R}^n\) be a sufficiently smooth convex body and let \(L\subset{\mathbb R}^n\) be a convex polytope or a sufficiently smooth convex body. Assume that \(L\) has maximal volume in \(K\) [among all affine transforms of \(L\) contained in \(K\)]. Then the authors establish useful conditions of John type which are necessarily satisfied. From these conditions, estimates for the Banach-Mazur distance between convex bodies \(K\) and \(L\) are derived if \(L\) is symmetric and \(K\) may or may not be symmetric. Such estimates were originally proved by \textit{M. Lassak} [Geom. Dedicata 72, No. 1, 63-68 (1998; Zbl 1035.52003)] by a different approach. As another consequence, the volume ratio of two convex bodies \(K\) and \(L\), where \(L\) has maximal volume in \(K\), is estimated from above. The proof of this estimate is also based on the (reverse) Brascamp-Lieb inequality.
