The authors investgate the truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD) method for the solution of a compact linear operator equation of the first kind. They call this the ``\(r\)-solution'' method and treat the case of compact perturbations of the operator. Estimates are provided for the relative error in the TSVD solution using the perturbed operator, assuming a ``clearance'' condition on the singular values of the original operator. An application is given to a linear inverse problem in wave propagation.
