Let \(D\) be a \((v,k,\lambda)\)-difference set in an abelian group \(G\). The author gave, for example in [A character approach to the multiplier conjecture and a new result for the case \(n=3n_1\), J. Comb. Des. 5, No. 2, 81-93 (1997; Zbl 0912.05016)] methods to prove (numerical) multiplier theorems using so-called CH-equations. In the present paper the author gives a theorem (too complex to be quoted here) to find cases in which nontrivial solutions \(\xi\) of CH-equations can not satisfy the equation \(D^{(t)}D^{-1}=n_1\xi+\lambda G\) for \(k-\lambda=n=qn_1\) where \(n_1\) is a proper prime divisor of \(n\) coprime with \(v\), and \(q\) is a prime coprime with \(v\) and with \(n_1\). It is used (together with cyclotomy and character theory) to give simplied proofs of previous multiplier theorems.
