This paper deals with the solution of ill-conditioned linear systems resulted from computational fluid dynamics. A novel version of preconditioned BICGSTAB method is introduced. The developed extension enables the control of the residual of the approximate solution independent of the specific left-, right- or two-sided preconditioning technique considered. Based on the presented algorithm, a new physically motivated preconditioning technique is defined by employing Gauss-Seidel preconditioner. A great variety of different numerical tests is presented. The results demonstrate the robustness of the new preconditioning technique.
